Our Community

The village of Caledonia, Washington County, is located in the Bellevue Valley of eastern Missouri. Founded in 1819, in the Greek Revival style, Caledonia has retained its period charm for nearly 200 years, siting over half its structures as “historic places.”

Bell Mountain Wilderness Area Trail

Council Bluff Recreation Area
The Council Bluff Recreation Area is perfect for anyone looking to enjoy the outdoors. The area provides ample opportunities for camping, picnicking, hiking, fishing, swimming and more. Created by a dam across Big River, Council Bluff Lake boasts 440 acres in size and 87 feet deep in some places. Hikers can enjoy scenic views of the lake, a look at the Mark Twain wilderness, and a variety of wildlife that makes its home in the heavily wooded area.

Elephant Rocks State Park
Giant elephant-shaped granite boulders are the star at Elephant Rocks State Park, bringing thousands of tourists each year to the Caledonia area. The park has a trail that winds through the rocks, which is an interpretative Braille trail. Abundant picnic areas and vibrant fall colors add to the park’s appeal.

Johnson's Shut-Ins
Play in the shallows of the East Fork of the Black River. Shoot through Mother Nature’s hydraulics in the shut-ins. Hike a trail that will show you 1.4 billion years of geologic history. Take your horse on a pretty mountain trail. Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park is a jewel of the system, a place with something for everyone: pretty picnic areas, Ozark landscapes, natural places to swim, and great campsites.

Old Village Mercantile
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Old Village Mercantile is the place to be. Our authentic circa 1909 mercantile takes you back to a simpler time. It is an experience for the whole family. Enjoy six hundred varieties of old-fashioned candy, fudge, a coffee house and smoothie bar, an antique gallery, gifts, and so much more! YMCA Trout Lodge & Camp
